If you notice a small smell of gas:
Call Consumers Gas immediately. Open doors and windows to get fresh air into the rooms.
If the smell gets stronger:
Leave the building immediately, leaving the door open to allow air to enter.
If the smell is strong or is accompanied by a hissing" noise
Leave the building immediately, leaving the door open to allow air to enter. Don't use your phone. Do not turn any electrical switches (lamps, appliances) either on or off. Don't use lighters or matches, and don't smoke. Call Consumers Gas from a neighbour's home.
What to do if you smell gas outside:
A strong gas odour in your yard, street or excavation site could mean that a gas main has been damaged. Call Consumers Gas immediately. Keep clear of the area. Don't use a cellular telephone near the area of the gas leak. Don't start any motors or motor vehicles near the area of the gas leak. Put out all open flames.
If there is a fire:
Do not attempt to put out the fire yourself. Never use water on burning gas. Call your local fire department.
