Chinese Association of Mississauga

Message from the President  by Philip Leong

Time flies and year end is fast approaching. Similarly, my term as president for the Chinese Association of Mississauga (CAM) is coming to an end soon. Thanks to the support from many volunteers, different communities, our directors and so forth, CAM has been able to sustain not only its long existing services, but also to extend it to include other services including the most needed services in Mandarin. We are proud to acknowledge that the number of people that we have served this year outnumbered previous years.

Like previous years, we have been in partnership with other organizations and communities in organizing large events. In May, together with sixteen other ethnic communities, CAM hosted the China Pavilion of the Carassauga Festival. In August, CAM and CPA jointly sponsored an exhibition booth with forty other sponsors and exhibitors in the Community Crime Awareness Symposium, organized by RCMP, Peel and York regions and Auxiliary Constabulary. This was the first time the Chinese Community participated in this kind of event in the GTA. In October, CAM ran along with the Peel Industrial Supplies, Trillium Health Care Credit Valley hospital, Canadian Cancer Society, etc. in promoting cancer awareness, and a cancer prevention seminar was organized. Just last month in November, the Mississauga Parent Council coordinated many interest – topic classes in our association. Currently, over eighty Chinese school students are attending classes in our association every Saturday after Chinese school. Other activities, which have always been well attended, included our CAM annual ball, Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, apple-picking, and Centre Island visit, just to name a few.

In order to accommodate the increase in services and activities, CAM was in need of more space. After a series of discussions with our landlord, we successfully acquired our neighboring unit, number 81. After expansion, our service center will be approximately 3500 sq. ft., up from approximately 1400 sq. ft. Of late, CAM is the largest and most spacious Chinese service center in Mississauga. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, directors and volunteers for all their hard work; and especially Mr. Simon Lee, one of our members, who donated $800.00 for a brand new ping-pong table for our Association. We truly appreciate Mr. Lee’s generosity.

On behalf of the staff, Board of Directors and community members, I wish you all a happy Chinese new year.

Phillip Leong
