June Letter Dear Friend of AFC, Something happened to me a week ago. last Saturday, right after we finished the AFC 25th Anniversary Banquet and the "Beyond McJobs" Conference, I was in my own church, and while I joined the young people for a basketball game after the fellowship, I collided with Jeff (Youth Fellowship President) in the air. I was bleeding badly on the head while Jeff was motionless for a long time, both of us were sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. I was pretty sure my injury was just external, indeed I needed only two stitches, but in my mind I was very worry about Jeff who remained speechless for hours after the accident, I earnestly prayed for him in my heart. Thank God, he eventually recovered, and both of us left the hospital together hours later. As we departed, he told me he was praying for me all this time too! Two days later, AFC staff had a farewell party for our outgoing Book House manager Virginia in my house. Several staff and volunteers shared how they learned the lesson of prayer from Virginia who often prays with people right in our bookstore, what an example! During this time of transition, may I ask you to pray for Virginia and her husband in their seminary studies and future ministry, as well as pray for our new Book House Manager Steven Ng in his new ministry. In regards to ministry, the Missions Across the Miles preparations are busily underway. This year we have more than 90 team members joining 7 trips. Personally, I'll be leading a team of 16 to Michigan on July 7, the target will mainly be Mandarin-speaking Scholars, I covet your prayer! I also covet your prayer in June as I'll be speaking in 5 different churches this month. In regards to Mandarin ministry, there is a surge of immigrant youths from China and Taiwan in recent years. AFC and a group of concerned youth workers have been holding monthly prayer meeting for this ministry, and had decided to organize a Mandarin speaking joint Campus Evangelistic Meeting this Fall. Please remember this ministry in your prayer! For the summer, would you also pray for the various AFC camps too: Gospel Camp in June, Basketball Camp in July and Campus Challenge '97 in August! Other than these prayer items, there are also praise items! As I mentioned earlier, the AFC 25th Anniversary Banquet was last weekend. Praise God, 500 guests came to celebrate with us on May 23, some came as far as Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Windsor! During the Banquet, Rev. H. H. Chan gave a sermon on "Service that pleases God"; while a video produced by SOBEM portrays AFC's student ministry vividly (if you would like to see it, please contact us); finally Rev. Sam Chan led us to respond in offering, he suggested a plan of donating a dollar a day to this important ministry. The response was great, more than $33,000 was collected, along with $10,000 in pledge, during the Banquet, Praise God! Not only we thank God for the financial offering, but also the fact that the vision of AFC student ministry was shared. The next day, we have the AFC conference on career for the new generation -- "Beyond McJobs". About 70 students and parents came, many felt that it was very helpful in view of rapid changes in society and workplace. We have prepared a career handbook for the participants, and we hope to expand it and to make it available as a resource for the young people. I thank God for a group of Christian professionals from different cities and different fields for their effort put into this conference. Finally, we are enclosing a new "Friend of AFC" card for you. Also, if you didn't attend the AFC Banquet, enclosed please also find the new AFC brochure and a special AFC bookmark. Once again, thank you for your support to AFC! May our Lord reward you for the offering you made for the sake of love of Christ! |
