About AFC September Letter

Dear Friend of AFC,

I've just returned from a short-term missions last night. I led a Gospel team consisted of 19 people to Windsor for the week of Aug. 25-31, 1997. My wife and our two daughters also went along. We slept on church floor, showered at the University, cooked our own meal, visited Chinese people daily and organized a teens program for 4 days with a Gospel Night on Saturday as the climax. At the end, 17 people prayed to accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour, and all of us felt exhausted physically but renewed spiritually.

What impressed me most from this trip is the zeal and potentials of the young people. As most of the team members are students with modest experiences and knowledge, I was amazed how God could use ordinary people for His extraordinary work! The trip became a week of intensive training for these young people. On the other hand, we offered a teens program for almost 30 teens, and as a result more than 10 teens came to the Lord. I was struck by the fact that student years are the golden years to win and train a person for Christ and His Kingdom!

This was also the feeling I had when I attended this year's Campus Challenge. I was leading a workshop on "Transforming Witnessing" for Aug. 23-24 and was impressed by the enthusiasm of those lovely students from various campuses. (A total of 60 students attended the camp this year). I was also encouraged by the students' initiatives to organize an AFC 25th Anniversary special program within the Camp.

As we come to the end of the summer and the beginning of the Fall, let me provide a list of Thanksgiving and Prayer requests for you to remember AFC in your prayer:

  1. Thank God that we have completed all our Missions Across the Miles trips, more than 100 brothers and sisters had experienced God's power in the Gospel and the joy of sharing His love.
  2. Thank God for all the sports ministry in the summer: 18 teams in the AFC Soccer League, and 16 teams in the AFC Basketball Tournament. About one third of these young people are non-Christians. Many of them attend Church as a result.
  3. Thank God that He had led Mr. Ian Chang to AFC to serve as the Student Outreach Staff since August. Please pray for his ministry to reach more unchurched students thru' innovative programs.
  4. Thank God for starting a mandarin speaking ministry. A Mandarin student Evangelistic Meeting is being organized for Sept. 26. Please pray for the preparation work: promotion, program, counsellor-training, finance, etc. and especially for non-Christian to come.
  5. Please pray for a leadership camp on Sept. 19-21 organized jointly by AFC and BOM (Breakthrough Oversea Missions) to train a new generation of leaders.
  6. Please pray for Vancouver ministry: we rejoice as Mr. Benny Chin and Miss Helena Ng were married on July 5 in Hong Kong, and as the new couple will settle in Ottawa, Mr. Chin will leave AFC as of Nov. 30. Please pray for the on-going ministry in Vancouver, and for Mr. Joshua Chow who will be on staff with AFC starting Nov. 1, 1997.
  7. Please pray for all the CCF's on various Campuses as students head back to school, pray that God will continue to use our staff to guide, motivate, train and coach the CCF's in their minsitries.
Thank you once again for your concerns and supports for AFC Student Ministry. May God continue to bless you and your family in the days to come!
