November Letter Dear Friend of AFC, As I am penning this letter, the Ontario teachers have already been on strike for a week. While the parents are so busy making arrangements for their children, we also begin to feel its full impact. Some after school C.C.F. activities must now take place at students' homes instead, we called off an A.F.C. sponsored school event 'Chinese Parents Night', the A.F.C. Basketball League is postponed until the strike is over... Obviously these inconveniences seem less significant when comparing with the upheaval of the global stock market. In both Hong Kong and Canada, the stock index has become the cause of many anxieties. This truly reminds us of the reality of the 'global village', that how a stock market on the other side of the Pacific Ocean can cause an upheaval in the North American market. It also prompts us to remember our Lord's teachings on investing in the Kingdom of God when there are often high risks involved in our investments on earth (Matt. 6:19-21, Lk. 12:15-21). Investing in the students of this generation is precisely the purpose of A.F.C. ministries. In the past week, I was under tight time constraint as I prepared for my South America trip, but I was still committed to two student ministry opportunities. One was a workshop on the 'Reliability of the Bible' in the York University Mandarin Group, the other one was on student small group training in the Divinity College of University of Toronto. I feel deeply moved and encouraged whenever I meet with these lovely students. Thank God for the opportunity for me to visit three South American countries in the first two weeks of November -- Venezuela, Panama and Costa Rica. I will be involved in Bible training (the book of Acts) and visitation there. Please pray for my ministries and my health that I am able to build up more Christian leaders! Relating to mission work, the theme of this year's Winter Conference is 'Mission Possible in a New Era'. Rev. James Taylor and Dr. Philemon Choi will be our keynote speakers. If there is any inquiry, please call (416) 494-7171. Furthermore, let me mention that next year I will be involved in two other major events: Metro Toronto Luis Palau Crusade (June 5th - 7th) and Chinese Mission '98 (December 26-30). Please pray for me and the events that God will be able to use them to preach the gospel! Concerning Mandarin speaking student evangelistic ministry; three hundred students from Taiwan and Mainland China attended the "Musical Drama Gospel Night" on September 26. Thank God that eighteen of them accepted Christ into their lives! Please pray for the follow-up work and the future of the Mandarin speaking student ministry! Originally, we had a deficit of about $1,000 to cover for this event. However, I just received an offering of $1,000 for this ministry. Thank God for His wonderful provision! However, please remember in your prayer that AFC still has a deficit of $33,000 so far this year. Besides the Mandarin speaking student work, we have started a new ministry -- student outreach. Reaching out to students in the community is what brother Ian has taken up since he joined AFC in August. He and other Christian young people have started to establish different contacts with the community. One of the exciting developments is that a youth group named F.L.Y. (Future Led By Youth) has already been formed. Its purpose is to affirm the potentials of young people and to concern youth's struggles with sexuality. I thank God that we had a recent opportunity to host a Chinese radio program (AM 1430 every Tuesday 4:30-5:00 p.m.) exploring related issues. This is our first step to make contacts and serve the young people in the community! May we continue to invest in our new generation so that they may become the new generation in the Kingdom of God! |
